5 reasons why it’s OK to down tools and take a holiday

Holidays are great for personal and professional development

While I am sitting on a beach in Egypt at the time of writing, I promise this post isn’t just to make me feel better about abandoning my inbox for a week.

Holidays, studying abroad or travelling for business can offer some great personal development opportunities. Here are my top 5 reasons to travel whenever you can.

  1. Great talking points
Your travels will serve as great conversation starters; at networking events, in interviews, getting to know your new team etc.
  2. Time to think
Beach time will give you the peace and quiet you need to sort all those great ideas you’ve had stored in your head for the last 6 months.
  3. Build your skill set
Learn new things; languages, customs etc. Seeing how others live can help you gain a better understanding of the world you work/do business in.
  4. Discover new opportunities
You might just happen upon a new business venture, opportunity for work relocation or a worthy love interest 😉
  5. It’s OK to go outside!
Books (and the internet) will only get you so far. My dad always stressed that being book-smart didn’t make you smart, you actually have to do things (beyond reading) if you want to achieve anything in life.
